E-mail Discussion Groups

ETJ is essentially run by e-mail groups. This makes it possible for regional committees to avoid having committee meetings, enables members from Okinawa to Hokkaido to communicate with each other with ease, and allows all members to keep in touch with what's going on within ETJ.

The General ETJ group

Almost all new members join this group. Most members receive a daily digest of messages, which means getting one e-mail each day that contains all the messages posted by members on the previous day. Some members prefer to receive individual messages and filter these e-mails into special folders.

Purpose of the group
To enable all members of ETJ to discuss, or read about, issues related to teaching English, and to receive information on ETJ activities.

To join the list
The list is only for members of ETJ. If you are a member of ETJ, please just send an e-mail to David@DavidEnglishHouse.com stating that you are a member. If you are not a member, please first join ETJ.

To post a message
Send the message to etj@yahoogroups.com and it will be received by all the other members of the group. If you are receiving the daily digest (see below), please delete the digest and change the subject heading before sending your message.

To unsubscribe
To temporarily unsubscribe, such as when taking a vacation, please send a message to David@DavidEnglishHouse.com stating the ETJ groups you belong to and the period for which you do not want to receive messages. To permanently unsubscribe, please send a blank message to etj-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com.

To access past messages
Please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups click on ëETJí and then on ëmessagesí.

Guidelines
There is a large and diverse group of teachers on this list, so there are some simple guidelines to encourage things to run smoothly. These are guidelines, not rules, and suggested modifications are always welcome. Please contact David@DavidEnglishHouse.com.

  1. Please post a maximum of one message per topic per day so that members who receive the daily digest can more easily join in discussions.
  2. Keep messages concise and to the point without long extracts from previous postings.
  3. Try not to jump on each other too much, and definitely avoid personal abuse.
  4. Focus on the topic, not the way a previous poster expressed him/herself. There are a lot of teachers on this list and we need to tolerate a wide variety of personal styles.
  5. Avoid discussing what we should or shouldn't be doing and how we should be doing it, and just do it - in other words, discuss the teaching of English.
  6. Keep the focus on teaching English as much as possible. Wider discussions on other issues are welcome, but, wherever possible, these discussions should be carried out in a way that feels relevant to the English teachers on this list. Politics and religion are to be avoided.
  7. Please always bear in mind that most members of this list receive daily digests, may not be familiar with discussion lists, and may react negatively if a small number of members fire messages at each other in a way and at a pace that does not fully consider their situation.

Guidelines
The following are only guidelines. They are not rules.

  1. Keep messages concise and to the point without long extracts from previous postings.
  2. Try not to jump on each other too much, and definitely avoid foul language and personal abuse. In general, language used on this list should be suitable for all audiences.
  3. Focus on the topic, not the way a previous poster expressed him/herself. There are a lot of teachers on this list and we need to tolerate a wide variety of personal styles.
  4. Keep the focus on teaching and running schools as much as possible. Wider discussions on other issues are welcome, but, wherever possible, these discussions should be carried out in a way that feels relevant to the teachers and school owners on this list. Politics and religion are to be avoided.
  5. Minimize discussions on rules, procedures and behaviour, and simply get on with discussions related to owning schools and teaching.
  6. All posts should be signed with the poster's name.
  7. If someone posts in parody, or even in humor, they should say so clearly. Misunderstandings have caused a lot of hurt feelings.

Emergencies
In an emergency, the list owner is able to suspend or ban a member, prevent a member from being able to post to the list, moderate messages from an individual member of the list or moderate all messages.
